Thai Iced Coffee, Explained: Oliang, Kafae Yen & Cha Yen
By the Thongyib Thongyod team · Updated 3 September 2026

Thai drink names can be confusing when they are translated loosely. Oliang generally refers to a Thai-style black iced coffee. Kafae yen literally means cold coffee and commonly refers to Thai iced coffee. Cha yen means cold tea and commonly refers to the orange Thai iced tea familiar from many menus.
Those definitions identify drink families, not one mandatory recipe. Coffee mixes, milk, sweeteners, spices and preparation can vary by shop and producer. The colour of a drink is not a complete ingredient statement, and a general article cannot establish a particular cafe’s recipe unless that cafe publishes it.
In short:
- Oliang is a Thai-style black iced coffee
- Kafae yen is a Thai term for cold coffee
- Cha yen is Thai iced tea, not coffee
- Recipes, ingredients and caffeine amounts vary
- Thongyib Thongyod’s current menu does not list oliang or kafae yen by those names
- Its printed menu does list Thai Milk Tea and ten signature coffees
What is oliang?
Oliang is commonly described as a Thai-style black iced coffee. Traditional and commercial versions are not identical: the coffee base and any additional roasted ingredients depend on the mix or seller. Some versions are sweetened and some are served without milk, but those conventions should not be treated as a complete recipe for every glass.
If an ingredient matters because of an allergy or dietary requirement, ask to see the product information or recipe. This site does not assign a roast composition, bean origin, sugar quantity, preparation method or caffeine figure to an unspecified oliang.
Kafae yen and cha yen are different drink families
Kafae yen is coffee; cha yen is tea. Beyond that distinction, the recipes can vary. Both may be served over ice and may include milk or sweetener, but a menu or seller should confirm the actual ingredients.
The current Thongyib Thongyod menu lists Thai Milk Tea at 69฿. It does not provide a separate ingredient description for that item, so this guide does not infer its tea blend, dairy content, spices, sweetness or preparation.
| Name | General category | What still needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Oliang | Thai-style black iced coffee | Coffee mix, added ingredients, sweetener and method |
| Kafae yen | Thai-style iced coffee | Coffee, milk, sweetener and method |
| Cha yen | Thai-style iced tea | Tea blend, milk, sweetener, colour and method |

How is Thai iced coffee prepared?
There is no single method shared by every stall, cafe and packaged mix. Cloth filters are associated with some traditional preparations, while other sellers use different brewers or pre-formulated products. Brewing temperature, filtering, coffee dose, sweetness and milk can all differ.
The current Thongyib Thongyod menu does not claim that its espresso drinks use a traditional cloth-filter method. Its printed signature descriptions identify espresso as the coffee base, so this guide does not connect those drinks to an undocumented preparation technique.
What coffee is on the current cafe menu?
Thongyib Thongyod’s current menu separates classic coffee and tea from ten signature coffees. Five examples with complete printed descriptions are:
- Tomyum Coffee — espresso, ginger, lemongrass, bergamot, soda, chili and lime, 99฿
- Yuzu Coffee — espresso with yuzu jam and soda, 99฿
- Popular Coffee — espresso, milk, caramel and popcorn, 99฿
- Coco Flower — espresso with coconut flower juice, 99฿
- Secret N.9 — espresso, lemon, mint, raw sugar and soda, 99฿
These are current printed ingredients, not claims about ingredient origin, preparation beyond what is stated, caffeine content or physiological effects. The menu lists all ten signature coffees at 99฿.
Caffeine and sweetness
Caffeine varies with the coffee product, dose, serving size and preparation. Sweetness likewise depends on the recipe. Without a published recipe or measurement, assigning one number to all oliang or comparing its effect with another coffee would be misleading.
The current cafe menu does not publish caffeine values. Several signature descriptions list soda, juice, milk, caramel, jam or raw sugar, but those ingredient lines do not provide quantities. Ask the team if you need current recipe information.
Dairy and dietary questions
The printed menu does not mark drinks vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free. Popular Coffee explicitly lists milk. Thai Milk Tea and drinks whose names include latte do not have full printed ingredient descriptions, so their exact dairy content should be confirmed rather than assumed.
General descriptions of kafae yen or cha yen cannot answer allergen or cross-contact questions for a particular venue. Tell the team about your dietary requirements before ordering.

Quick answers
Is oliang always made from one particular bean blend? No single composition applies to every product or seller. Check the mix or ask the seller.
Is Thai iced tea coffee? No. Cha yen is tea; kafae yen is coffee.
Is there one standard caffeine amount? No. The cafe menu does not publish caffeine measurements, and recipes and serving sizes vary.
Does Thongyib Thongyod list oliang? The current menu does not list a drink by that name. It lists classic espresso drinks, Thai Milk Tea and ten signature coffees.
Where can I compare the signature coffees? Browse the current menu or coffee guide. The cafe is inside Ao Nang Landmark and is open daily 8:00–18:00.
The useful distinction is simple: oliang and kafae yen are coffee terms, while cha yen is tea. Everything more specific—from ingredients to preparation and caffeine—depends on the actual product and recipe.
